How To Create Storage Space In A Small Home
The number one problem with small homes is a lack of storage space. The rooms themselves are big enough to keep you comfortable and cosy, but they keep being filled with clutter and other items. There’s nowhere else to store these things as you lack the storage space of a bigger property.
You end up feeling quite claustrophobic and desperately searching for ideas to free up space in your home. The first port of call is to declutter – though you’ve already tried this many times. It’s got to the stage where you have as little clutter as possible yet still struggle for storage space.
How do you create more storage space in a small home? You best place to start is with these three ideas:
Add a shed to your garden
If you have a garden – even a small one – then it’s a great place to put a shed. You could even fit it down the side of your house if there’s room. Lots of small sheds make for excellent outdoor storage areas to keep different clutter or items that take up a lot of space inside you’re home. It’s a fantastic place to keep cleaning products, bin bags, recycling and various things that won’t be needed every day.
Sheds like these give the benefit of more storage space without taking up interior space. Your home magically feels more empty and spacious – all you’ve sacrificed is a small bit of your garden, but it’s worth it!
Transform furniture into storage solutions
Two ideas spring to mind under this heading:
- Buy furniture with built-in storage
- Use the space under your furniture for storage solutions
The first idea is an easy way to upgrade your home with multifunctional furniture. Ottoman beds contain lots of storage inside, allowing you to sweep up clutter and keep it under your mattress. The same goes for footstools or pouffes; the tops can come off of these to reveal storage compartments below.
If you don’t want to buy lots of new furniture (which is fair enough), then find ways to utilise the space underneath beds, sofas and armchairs. Buy flat storage boxes that slide under these spaces – or storage draws that you can wheel out – and they give you somewhere to keep many different items.
Either way, your furniture becomes a powerful tool in decluttering your home and making more storage space.
Utilise tall and narrow shelving
Find shelving units that aren’t too wide but can reach your ceiling. They provide loads of storage places for items like books, games, candles and many other miscellaneous things that are dotted around your home.
Install these in pretty much every room to provide much-needed storage space without sacrificing too much floor space. The height of these shelving units means they take advantage of vertical space, yet the narrowness means they’re not overly oppressive.
The underlying point of this post is that you can create storage space in a small home. Don’t resign yourself to a live of claustrophobia; try some of the ideas above to gain more storage space while freeing up your living space!
