Got a Bad Neck? Here Are Three Small Things That Can Help

Neck pain is an extremely common complaint amongst the general population, with more than 203 million global sufferers across all age groups. The pain can resemble anything from a minor annoyance to a severe, debilitating condition, and adding to the issue is that people often find it very difficult to get to the bottom of it. It’s common for sufferers to be passed from point to point, with little or no resolution. Understanadably, this can be very demotivating, and if you’re feeling that way, you’re certainly not alone.

Thankfully, although it may be difficult, there’s still plenty that can be done. To help you begin and finally get a handle on your neck pain, here are three small things that could help you on your journey.

  1. Apply Gentle Stretching Techniques

You’ll likely have heard a lot about stretching already, but if you’ve done any research online, you’ll quickly learn there are thousands of different types of stretches.

For anyone just starting, gentle stretching is always the best way forward. You don’t want to try anything too strenuous, as this could easily worsen your condition, as the tissues are already delicate. Straightforward movements that take your neck through the full range of motion are your best bet, such as basic neck tilts, circles, and shoulder rolls. Check out this video as a start.

  1. Work on Your Posture

A lot of neck-related problems come from how people sit and stand. Over the years, posture has gotten worse; people are spending more time slouched, hunched over in chairs, or craning their necks forward and down to look at their phones. It’s important to remember that the neck has to support the head, which is relatively heavy: any deviation from normal cervical balance can increase the amount of vertical weight on the muscles, which then results in strain and pain.

If you work in an office, prioritize ergonomics. Learn the best chair and desk height for you, and be mindful of slouching. At home, support your head with a soft pillow while sitting on the sofa.

  1. Try Using Heat

Applying heat to the affected area can significantly help with pain. The warmth allows the muscles to relax, and less tension means less pain.

There are a variety of methods you can use here, from warm showers and baths to heat pads you lay directly over the muscles when seated. There are also certain heat creams you can purchase that help relax the muscles.

Temperature-wise, build up slowly. It’s easy to burn yourself if you’re not careful, and you don’t want to be adding that sort of pain to what you’re already dealing with.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, the above techniques will help to relieve your pain. If your neck issues are seriously degrading your quality of life, however, it’s always important to seek out quality physiotherapy. A professional diagnosis and treatment plan should be your first port of call for severe neck problems, and you’ll get the fastest resolution that way. Good luck!
