Fishing Must Haves – A Beginners Guide To A Great Fishing Trip

When you are thinking about going fishing, there are some fishing must haves you need to consider. Even the most simple things such as taking care of yourself as well as having the right fishing equipment for you to use.

Fishing is a family tradition, my Grandad, Uncles, Me, my Son’s… we all like to go fishing. Sometimes we go to places that are a little walking distance away, set up camp and enjoy the day.

There is a long list of things you may need to take with you so here is a little peek at what you need.

Fishing Must Haves – A Beginners Guide

Fishing poles

Now fishing poles come in an array of sizes, lengths and types. There are specific types of poles also so check what pole you need (Sea, lake and so on).

I purchased a smaller one for me that was lightweight and easy to use, the same for my children. But I wanted poles they could grow into also. With so many options to choose from, speaking to a specialist will really help you long term.

Fishing reels and line types

So again, check where you are going and what kind of reel do you need. Also same with the line, there are many line types. From thin to thicker line, to different material, you need to make sure you are choosing the right type for your pole and also where and what you are fishing!

Most retailers can assist with choosing the right rod and reel. Also, make sure to keep an eye out for discounts and coupon codes (discover more here) if you want to get the best deal on your new gear.

Bait

Bait also depends on where and what you are fishing. You can choose bait from live such as worms and maggots, to dried and even sweetcorn.

Also, choose your bait on what you feel comfortable with also, you don’t want to be choosing bait that creeps you out or you feel you are unable to touch it.

Clothing

You need to stay comfortable when fishing as this can take an entire day. Think about the elements for that day and what you need to stay safe, warm and comfortable throughout the day. Also consider the weather turning, you want to be prepared for every eventuality, will it start raining or get really warm later on?

Shoes need to be sturdy and comfortable, Hi Tec have some wonderful clothing and shoes. Hiking boots are the best.

Accessories

Accessories are important when you are looking for your fishing must haves. You want to make sure you have everything to keep you comfortable and also things that are going to be really valuable throughout the day.

Again, think about the weather, keeping an umbrella is a must and can help keep you dry and out of the sun. A good sturdy chair, a light table, things such as scissors and a USB battery charger for your phone. You don’t want to get caught out with a dead phone as no way to keep it charged.

Personal items – So sun cream is a must have, never go without sun cream. Even if it is cloudy, you can still get burnt.

Food & Drink

Take a nice picnic, it’s hungry work out there. Take food that can be kept in a cooler and doesn’t need cooking. The last thing you want is to make a BBQ there, you want to think of those around you fishing too, would they think it is a good idea? Take sandwiches, snacks and something to keep you fuelled.

Drinks – lots of refreshing drinks, take a cooler to keep them nice and cool. Mix it up and take water as well, you never know when you need a bottle of water for more than just a drink!

Important things

Hand sanitiser, wipes, anything to keep clean. It’s a bit of a messy job at times.  A first aid kit is valuable. Can’t tell you how many times I cut myself. Take things you might need, a pair of scissors, tape, sunglasses.

So long as you have the essentials, you can have a fun day out by the lake. What is your fishing must haves?
