Lavender
The most popular and widely used is Lavender Essential Oil. You will find many products targeted at anxiety contain lavender.
A very floral and soothing essential oil that has wonderful benefits such as easing anxiety, calming, soothing and a wonderful aid for sleep. Especially when blended with other essential oils.
With the calming properties of Lavender, this is perfect for easing anxiety and help you gather your thoughts and be at peace.
Lavender is a cheaper essential oil.
Valerian
This is quite a pungent essential oil, one of my favourites. Valerian is a root that is known as ‘natures valium’. With a woody, balsamic and pungent scent, this will help you drift off to sleep.
If you mix Lavender and Valerian together, you get a wonderfully scented and calming blend that works very well and the Lavender helps tone down the pungency of Valerian.
Valerian root is full of antioxidants so a good sleep tea is Valerian and Lavender. They contain valerenic acid and isovaleric acid which are wonderful for promoting sleep.
Can be used with migraines, tension, nervous tension, anxiety, insomnia and nervous digestion issues.
Valerian is generally a more expensive essential oil.
Bergamot
A deliciously citrus scent, Bergamot is used to elevate mood and alleviate stress. Which can help with reducing your anxiety and stress symptoms.
It’s a very uplifting scent that makes you feel happier and calmer.
I use this often, especially when I have a lot of work to do and feeling slightly drained.
Wonderful to be blended with Chamomile!
Bergamot is generally a cheaper essential oil. Certainly, one to consider for aromatherapy for anxiety.
Roman Chamomile
Of course, we have the very widely used Roman Chamomile which is widely known for the anxiety-reducing and calming properties.
A cup of chamomile tea is very popular as a way to calm down after something has happened, or going through some struggles.
I love using chamomile and it has a herby and apple-like scent. Mostly I blend it with other essential oils such as Bergamot or Lavender.
Also great for sleep, relaxing and calming.
Roman chamomile is a more expensive essential oil.
Jasmine
A wonderful, floral scent that is either a love or hate. It’s quite pungent so you only need the smallest amount.
Jasmine is very well known for the anxiety-reducing properties and creating a calming atmosphere. It’s one of the widely used essential oils to calm anxiety.
But Jasmine is not for everyone and there are other options like Rose.
Jasmine goes very well with Frankincense.
Jasmine absolute is very expensive, but you can generally get a blend which is cheaper.
Rose
Another popular option is Rose. Very relaxing, calming and has wonderful therapeutic properties to help you calm down and soothe your anxiety.
Can be blended with anything, it is quite a versatile essential oil and blends with everything.
A very expensive option, but you can look for Rose Geranium or Geranium as a substitute. Rose Absolute is one of the few expensive essential oils.
Vetiver
I enjoy the woody scent of vetiver, it is spicy, warming and I wear it as a perfume.
Vetiver is said to help with muscular pain, anxiety, nervousness and insomnia. Paired with Valerian, you have a very powerful sleep blend.
This is a mid-range cost essential oil, but check the brand as sometimes, they can be watered down with base oils
Frankincense
A popular option for those that like the spicy and woodier scents, Frankincense is perfect to use when you are feeling stressed and need to relax. It helps calm you when you are feeling anxious and can be blended with the more woody and pungent scents like Valerian for a wonderful blend.
Of course, a Christmas essential oil that many people use. Frankincense and Myrrh is a very popular blend. But Frankincense on its own is a powerful anxiety-reducing essential oil.
Final Thoughts
Whatever you decide to use, the above essential oils are perfect for aromatherapy for anxiety and they are essential oils to calm anxiety.
