How The Things We Wear Reflect Who We Are

Have you ever stopped to think about what your wardrobe says about you? We mean thinking about things like your favourite jeans, your trusty pair of trainers you wear all the time, or perhaps your statement necklace that you got a million years ago and still love now. In other words, we’re talking about the things you choose to wear and put on your body – what does it all say and how does it give people an insight into who you are?

The thing about style is that it’s not just about fashion – not totally, anyway. It’s about your identity, the mood you’re in, stories you want to tell, and so much more – and the best part is that you really don’t have to be into fashion or understand trends for it all to make an impact. With that in mind, keep reading to learn a bit more about how the things we wear reflect who we are.

It’s A Canvas

One way to go about things is to think of your wardrobe as a blank canvas and every piece of clothing you choose is adding another colour or element to it, so in the end you’re made an image of the person you actually are – or the person you want to present to the world, anyway (which could be two different things).

And you can change the elements on the canvas depending on what you’re doing and what you need to show people – you could dress for business, for fun, for comfort, to show you love a team or a fandom, and so much more. You’re telling a story every time you choose an outfit, so make sure it’s the one you want to tell.

Accessories Say A Lot

Sometimes it’s not the clothes themselves but the little details you wear with that that really show off who you are, and accessories like scarves, bags, or hats, can say so much, even if you wear the same clothes (or same type of clothes) every day. That means that even if you wear a uniform, you can accessorise (within reason – there might be rules, of course) and still stand out and tell your story.

And jewellery is a really important part of all that. Even something simple like a nice necklace or a bracelet can make you feel a lot more confident because you’ll feel happy and more like yourself when you’re wearing it. That’s because the pieces you choose, whatever they’re like and however they look, are going to carry some kind of meaning, whether that’s a memory or just that you fell in love with it. That’s important when you’re showing who you are.

You Can Dress For Connection

Although what we wear is mostly about expressing who we are, there’s another side to it that could be interesting and might make you re-think (or at least assess) your choices – because you can actually dress for connection.

What does that mean? It means that choosing what to wear can be a way to connect with other people – uniforms bring people together, after all, so choosing to wear something that other people will recognise (in the way they’d know a uniform) could be important. We mentioned fandoms earlier, and wearing your sports team logo or a band tee or just something with a fun quote on it that gets people talking could work well.
