3 Home Maintenance Tasks That Are Often Forgotten About
Every home needs maintenance, and if you’re a homeowner, you’ll know all too well that there are countless amounts of tasks that need to be done. And, with so many tasks on your plate, it’s really easy to miss the odd job here and there. The problem you face is if certain tasks are left unfinished, it could lead to a much bigger and expensive problem in the long run. Obviously you want to avoid this, so let’s check out a handful of tasks that are often missed when it comes to home maintenance.
Check your HVAC!
There’s a good chance that your HVAC gets a lot of use, particularly during warmer seasons! Because of this, it will go through a lot of wear and tear, and that’s why it’s important to check it regularly to see if it needs any repairs. Keep an eye out for any signs that the system is damaged such as odd noises, weak airflows and even foul or odd smells.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to call a professional to come and fix your system. The last thing you want is high energy bills and a home that’s too hot or cold. In the meantime, you can help prolong the life of your HVAC by cleaning the filters regularly. Every 3-6 months should suffice, but this will depend on the age of your system.
Clean your refrigerator
This one might seem a little obvious, but it’s a job that often goes overlooked in many homes. Because our refrigerators are always in use, we often don’t think about emptying it to clean it thoroughly – unless a problem crops up. However, it’s best not to let it get to that stage. Once every month or so, spend half an hour completely emptying it and soaking all of the shelving in hot soapy water.
If you eat meat or have had anything raw in your refrigerator, there’s a good chance the shelves need a good soak. Not only that, it gives you a chance to really clean out the interior of your refrigerator – including the drain hole. If this is blocked, it will prevent your food from being stored at optimal refrigerator temperature, which obviously you want to avoid. So, take the time to clean your refrigerator!
Service your fireplace
Finally, if you’re lucky enough to have a working fireplace in your home, then it’s important to look after it! Without regular maintenance, you could struggle with ash clogging up the chimney – and that’s one of the easier problems to resolve! If not properly looked after, fireplaces and chimneys pose fire threats, drafting issues, and animals can even fall in and become stuck!
You should consider having your fireplace professionally cleaned at least once a year, and serviced regularly too. This will prevent any risks of gas leaks and keep your chimney clear so that you can safely use your fireplace without any worries.
Nobody wants to spend more money than necessary on home maintenance, so don’t forget these!
