Sun Safety Tips for Busy Mums

Between school runs, sport practice, grocery runs, work and trying to remember whether anyone has eaten a vegetable, today many mums spend a surprising amount of time outdoors without really thinking about sun protection. The problem is that sun exposure can quietly build up over time, especially in countries where the UV levels are high for much of the year. Southern safety doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t have to take up too much time. If you’re remembering to put sunscreen on the kids because they need it, why aren’t you remembering to do it yourself? That’s the biggest problem for most mums. They don’t put themselves first in any way, but a few simple habits make a big difference.

  1. Make skin checks part of your routine. One important habit is booking regular appointments. You need to go to a skin cancer clinic if you have any concerns, spend a lot of time updoors or have fair skin. Skin checks can help to identify unusual spots or changes early, often before they become more serious. It’s easy for mums to prioritise everyone else’s appointments while putting their own health last, but regular skin monitoring is an important part of your long term well-being. A quick annual check provides you with Peace of Mind.
  2. Sunscreen deserves a permanent spot by the door. If you’re putting sunscreen on the kids every day, you need to remember you. Most people remember sunscreen at the beach, but forget about it during normal everyday activities. School pickups, playground visits, walking the dog, and weekend sports can all add up to significant exposure. Keeping sunscreen somewhere visible, like near the front door or in the car, makes it very easy to apply before you head out. Choosing a lightweight sunscreen that feels comfortable on the skin can also help to turn it into a daily habit rather than an occasional one. And yes, sunscreen matters even on a cloudy day.
  3. Hats are not just for kids. Children often leave the house wearing giant hats while mums stand beside them, squinting directly into the sun with absolutely no protection. A good hat can make a difference in protecting your face, scalp and neck from UV exposure. Wide brim hats are stylish and they offer more coverage than standard caps, and they also keep you cooler during warmer months. Plus, they make it easier to look put together even when operating on minimal sleep and iced coffees.
  4. Sunglasses are a must. Sun protection is not just about skin. Eyes can also be affected by UV exposure over time, which is why good sunglasses are always worth investing in. Polarised glasses with proper UV protection help to shield the eyes while also reducing glare, especially during driving her outdoor activities. They are  practical, protective and occasionally useful for hiding how tired you are.
  5. Shade can become your best friend. Busy mums spend a lot of time sitting out through outdoor activities like sports games, park visits and weekend events. Seeking shade where you can reduce direct sun exposure without requiring too much of an effort. Portable umbrellas, shaded seating areas and even trees can all help.
