The Hidden, But Effective Aspects Of Home Security
You deserve to live in a safe and comfortable home, particularly if you have children to take care of. That said, not all homes are alike. Most likely, you’ve already attended to the most essential considerations – you’ve implemented strong door locks, you know to close all of the windows before you leave for the school run, and you keep good contact with your neighbors to report suspicious activity should you see it.
But of course, it’s also worth considering the less-considered aspects of home security. After all, thieves tend to look past the most obvious protections you have in place in order to seek their window of opportunity. This isn’t to say you’ll ever have to deal with someone like that, luckily, home intrusions or thefts are still statistically rare, but it’s always good to know you’re as protected as possible in any case.
In this post, we’re going to discuss some of the hidden but effective aspects of home security worth considering. With that in mind, you’ll be able to cultivate your safest homestead possible.
Access Routes Around Your Home
It’s essential to care for access points in and around your home, because any hidden area might be a potential attack vector used by a trespasser. Perhaps you keep your ladder external to your home, but a potential thief could use that to climb onto a porch area and then in through a second-floor window. Adding motion-sensitive lighting on your driveway or ginnel could make a big difference here, as could installing privacy fencing with robust gates. This way, you won’t give any hidden or easy option to access your property.
Window Strength & Protection
It’s important to ensure you’re using updated, modern windows, preferably double glazing, and that the trimmings are robust. This can prevent anyone easily breaking their way in or using cutting tools to access part of your property, which is rare but unfortunately does happen. Of course, investing in robust windows like this can also prevent the spread of damp in the home, and improves your insulation. You may also consider selecting options with ventilation locks, to ensure you can allow fresh air in your home without risking your security at night.
Privacy & Storage
While it’s unlikely that your home would be randomly targeted for a break-in, you can add a healthy dose of statistical likelihood if you show off your valuables in clear sight. This is why it’s good to have blinds, netted curtains or any other means of diffusing easy viewing into your home. It’s why it’s good to keep valuables away from the windows and oriented so they can’t be seen as easily. It’s why closing your curtains at night is a smart move. It’s also wise to lock up your family valuables in the garden shed each night, such as bicycles and scooters. When you look like less of a target, you tend to become less of a target, and that in itself can be a real step towards home safety and security.
With this advice, you’re sure to implement the hidden yet effective aspects of home security, and stay as safe as possible.
