Most of the time, buying furniture new is quite expensive and generally we find it hard to find items that suit our theme. I heard about upcycling a while back when it was a huge trend and got me thinking about some tips for upcycling furniture.
You don’t have to be skilled either, you can easily upcycle furniture by using guides and tips online or YouTube. There are so many dedicated websites and YouTube channels for upcycling and giving you ideas of making the old tat look new and improved.
From an old set of drawers to a bed, you can find super cheap ways to create your own items or upcycle items as required.

Second Hand Items
You can find second hand items almost everywhere. Look for charity shops or search on Facebook for groups dedicated to selling or giving away from free in your area.
Generally people love a good clear out and offer items such as chest of drawers that you can sand down or give them a nice paint.
Charity shops generally have very cheap items that you can change based on your theme in your home.
Pallets
I found there are so many items you can create with old palettes. You can get the pallets from anywhere for free or a very low price.
Give them a good sanding and a lick of paint and you can create a lot of items.
Such as planters, decking, furniture even! I found some amazing YouTube videos on making your own planters using recycled wood and palettes.
Tools
Get a good collection of tools, you don’t have to splash out on these. In fact you could probably pick most up from car boots and the like.
I do recommend investing in some good paint brushes, these will last you a life time if you keep them clean.
You don’t have to purchase a sander, you can just grab yourself some sand paper in different grains and do it from there.
Prepare and plan
Preparation and planning is the key!
Items should be sanded before you even consider painting or covering in vinyl etc.
Get a planner and write down some ideas of what you would like to do. Such as colour themes, items you could upcycle and places to visit for your goods.
Bits and bobs
Gather bits and bobs as you see them cheap, such as handles and casters.
Ebay is a great place to find such items at a good price and are handy to keep for future projects.
Buying in bulk is also cheaper in the long run if you fancy having all items having the same handles.
All in all, enjoy having fun with upcycling your items rather than paying out in bulk.
