Things to Do Before You Move Abroad

If you’ve made the life changing decision to move abroad, then right now you’re probably feeling a myriad of emotions. There might be fear, you might be excited, you may even be absolutely terrified about what you’re about to do and think you’re crazy for doing it. But you’re not. Moving abroad is going to get you some naysayers and everybody that you know as well as their aunts, uncles and grandparents are going to have an opinion on it.

The beauty of that is that you don’t have to listen. All you need to do is think about where you’re going to store all of your belongings and how long you’re going to be abroad for. Some people decide to relocate overseas for a year or two as they want the experience before they come home and settle down. Others choose to forgo the storage unit idea and completely sell up their lives and pack up their belongings. Go and stay abroad for the rest of their lives.It’s an exciting thing to do and it’s something that you’re never going to forget, no matter which way you’re around it you go. With that in mind, we’ve got a short list of things that you should be doing before you move abroad.

1. Make sure you have your visas. Applying for a visa and being approved for one is the only way you’re truly going to be able to move abroad. You can’t move from the UK to Australia, for example, without having a visa in place, whether that be a temporary visa, a working holiday visa or a permanent residency visa. It’s actually the longest part of the whole process, and you’re going to find that you are drowning in paperwork while you do it, but it’s going to help you in the long run.
2. Buy that plane ticket. How are you planning to get yourself abroad? You’re going to need a plane ticket to get there, and you’re going to be able to choose the right one as long as you are shopping in advance. There are plenty of options for plane tickets when you’re going abroad, but going one way might be the one time you choose to go business class or even further with first class. Plane ticket prices tend to go up within about four weeks of departure, so the closer you wait to your date, the more expensive it’s going to be. Buying early can help you to avoid that.
3. Research your location. You’ve got your visa, you’ve got your plane ticket, and you’re ready to get going. But where are you planning to live? You need to know about the city you’re heading to, and you need to think about researching everything from the local language to the local traditions. If you’re going to a country where you don’t necessarily speak the language, then it might also be a good idea to start researching local language lessons.
4. Start packing early. This is not the same as going on holiday. Earlier we talked about a storage unit and you may actually need one if you’re moving abroad, especially if you want to keep some of your furniture back because you plan to come back again in a few years.
5. Hire a professional moving company. Packing early is essential to get a headstart, but figuring out how to transport your belongings to another country can be incredibly stressful. So, choosing a moving company that has plenty of experience of overseas moves is a must.
