The child’s room is one of the most interesting rooms in your home. This is the space where one can create fantasy and a unique decorating universe that truly fits your child. Here are my tips to create a unique child’s room without having to spend a fortune. Firstly, you must seek to create a world of decoration so you should choose soft and timeless colors. Of course you can add art and other decorative items to make the walls less bare, or choose wallpaper.  A children’s room allows you to allow yourself many fantasies and to play with color. If the budget allows, all the walls in the room can be painted by a professional artist who will offer their art, something unique and bespoke that will thrill the child. You can do artwork on any plain white wall, so that is something to think about! Here are some fun tips to help you on your journey.

Child-friendly materials

  1. Rattan, the current trend – There is more and more rattan furniture for children. The small rattan chairs and furniture adapt perfectly to the small spaces because they are not imposing and their aerial structure gives the room space. They are perfect if you have adopted a wallpaper with large patterns. They will lighten the atmosphere of the room.
  2. Wood: a must for those who love classic decoration. Wooden furniture is a great addition to any children’s room. In order to avoid the feeling of tiredness or outdatedness, you can use raw wood in the room. It is more suitable for children also
  3. Natural materials: cotton & linen textiles: Cotton and linen are perfect for bed linen. It is breathable and great for kids. It is safe, isn’t overpowering and gives kids a cosy feel too. There are plenty of cotton designs for duvet sets.
  4. Choose furniture well – a child’s bed is perhaps the most important purchase of the whole room. It should be secure and safe as well as comfy and supportive. In this case, you should look at kids beds at Cuckooland for some inspiration!
  5. Lighting: The child’s room must have at least 3 different light sources. A light near the bed for reading, a main light for normal usage and a desk lamp of some kind for when they do their homework.
  6. Storage: to give them a taste for storage and organization from an early age, be sure to get them to use shelves and cupboards as well as other storage devices. You can opt for baskets, boxes which will help define your space.

A space dedicated to work

A space for play and relaxation near a window can be great, you can use ottomans and a blanket to make a cozy reading corner. You should also consider a desk for the child so that they can work in their room if they need to and not at the kitchen table or in front of the TV. When you can make the separations, it is much easier and the child will understand the concept of down time and work time.

General rules of decorating a children’s room

Before considering the main details, you should be familiar with the general rules for decorating rooms to make things easier. Consider the functionality of the space and the preferences of its inhabitants. For instance, when designing bedrooms for children, paying attention to elements like the size or the colours of beds for kids is important Similarly, incorporate elements of fun throughout the design for wall pieces and smaller furniture items. Patterned lamps and cushions by Fermoie work really well here. They come in various colourways that can easily be switched out as the child ages and their tastes change.

Furniture

When purchasing furniture, it is best to choose the products made on the basis of natural materials, among which the main place is occupied by a variety of wood with many advantages:

  • High ecological compatibility;
  • Hypoallergenic;
  • Strength and durability;
  • Resistance to kids drawing or damaging the furniture;
  • Aesthetic grandeur.

It is best to purchase items for the bedroom from items made of MDF. They still have power, stability and safety, but are much cheaper than other types of wood and a little softer too!

  • All the furniture in the room must match the child’s growth so choose chairs and furniture that suit their height. It is necessary so that the children can safely get their stuff and not drag them around or get hurt moving them. Multifunctional furniture is ideal, for example under the desk there may be a shelf to place laundry!
  • The children’s room must have interior items such as a bed, wardrobe and/or table and chair if your space allows, but there is no need to overcrowd things and overstimulate. However, it is better to leave more room than not enough, for the child’s growth.
