How Long Does It Take for Your Eyelashes to Grow?
It’s common for the average person to lose one to five eyelashes each day. That may sound like a lot but with 90-160 eyelashes on your upper eyelid and 75-80 on your lower, having a few fall out doesn’t make a huge difference in the overall appearance. Your eyelashes are growing each day, filling in the minuscule gaps.
If you’ve wondered how long does it take for your eyelashes to grow, wonder no longer. In this guide, we’ll go over how fast the process is, things you can do to accelorte the process, and various ways you can make your eyelashes appear longer and thicker.
How Long Does It Take for Your Eyelashes to Grow?
The growth cycle of your eyelashes is similar to the hair growing out of your scalp. They shed and grow around every 6-10 weeks. Each eyelash has its own specific lifespan, varying from four months to almost 11.
There are three phases to an eyelash’s lifespan:
- Growth Phase: The anagen or growth phase lasts between four and 10 weeks, with an eyelash growing 0.12-0.14 millimeters a day
- Degradation Phase: The catagen or degradation phase is when your eyelash stops growing and the hair follicle starts to shrink
- Resting Phase: The telogen or resting phase is the final phase where the eyelash falls out
If an eyelash has been cut or burned out, it’ll take around six weeks for it to grow back. That is only if there’s no damage to the eyelid or follicle.
However, if an eyelash has been pulled out, it’ll take longer for it grow back. The replacement process of an eyelash slows down when it’s pulled out. Pulling out an eyelash before its natural cycle is done will disrupt it.
Factors That Can Affect the Regrowth Process
If you’re eager to grow your lashes, keep in mind there are a few factors that can affect the process. Some of these things may be out of your control.
- Damage to the eyelash’s hair follicle
- Recovery from different medical conditions or physical trauma
- Nutritional deficiences
- Hormone imbalances
- Medications, like for chemotherapy or thyroid treatment
If there’s an underlying condition that’s affecting your hair’s growth cycle, that’ll need to be addressed first before focusing on your eyelashes.
Be Gentle With Your Eyelashes
Your eyelashes are extremely fragile. They do grow back, but you should avoid certain activities that can add to the rate in which they fall out.
Take Off Your Eye Makeup
Leaving your eye makeup on overnight can dry out your lashes, making them more brittle. Brittle eyelashes are more susceptible to breakage. Use a gentle cleanser to clean off your eyemakeup.
Use Eyelash Curlers With Care
If you use an eyelash curler, don’t tug on your lashes with it. Avoid pressing too hard and only curl the lashes for around five seconds.
Don’t Rub Your Eyes
Rubbing your eyes too often can contribute to your eyelashes being pulled out. If you need to rub them, like if you’re suffering from itchy eyes, put a cold compress on your eyelids for relief instead.
Keep Your Makeup Sponges and Brushes Clean
Your makeup sponges and brushes can have a lot of bacteria in them. That bacteria can cause irritation to your eyes and loss of eyelashes. Clean your makeup tools at least twice a month.
How to Grow Long Eyelashes
If you’re looking for easy ways on how to make your eyelashes longer, there are a few ways to naturally do that. While each method isn’t guaranteed, they can contribute to an overall healthier lifestyle.
- Supplement your diet with vitamins, such as biotin
- Eating healthy foods such as nuts, sweet potatoes, and fatty fish
- Use an eyelash growth serum
- Apply castor oil to your eyelashes
Any product you apply to your eyelashes should be done so gently to keep existing eyelashes intacts. Speak with a medical professional if you think there’s an underlying medical reason contributing to your eyelash loss.
Tools for Long and Thick Eyelashes
If you want to have long and thick eyelashes that nature can’t seem to give you, there are ways you can boost the appearance of your eyelashes.
Lash Lift
A lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that uses a solution to naturally curl your lashes. The treatment can last you around one to three months. However, a lash lift doesn’t increase the amount of eyelashes you have or lengthen them.
A lash lift gives a natural curl and lift to your eyelashes. You can apply a water based mascara and other eye makeup products to your lashes just 24 hours after the treatment. You need to be careful not to get them wet during that time period.
You can customize your lashes with a lash lift as well. Choose if you want a subtle curl or something more dramatic.
Eyelash Extensions
With eyelash extensions, artificial eyelashes are added to your existing set of lashes, making them look longer and thicker. The process is easily implemented with a lash extension kit. You have more options with eyelash extensions depending upon the look you want to achieve.
Eyelash extensions let you completely customize your look. You can select your curl, length, color, and thickness. Eyelash extensions need fillers every two to three weeks and you need to be careful not to rub your eyes.
No matter which route you choose, lash lifts and eyelash extensions give you the ability to improve the length and thickness of your eyelashes.
