Everything You Need To Know About A Black Tie Dress

There are occasions in everyone’s life when you need the perfect dress for that special occasion. We’re not talking about your wedding dress or another occasion where you have control over the details. This is when you have received an invitation to a black-tie dress event and you don’t know what to wear.

It’s funny, for a man the code literally means wearing a black tie and looking super smart. (tuxedos are the norm). It isn’t always so easy to interpret for a woman. but, it definitely doesn’t mean you need to put a tie on!

Understanding Black Tie

A black-tie event is usually formal and is likely to take place in the evening. It is generally regarded as the most formal of dress codes, showing that you are going to an elite venue. This means you are looking for something stylish which should, ideally, be floor length.

Black tie is not the place for your mini-dress.

Looking at this impressive collection of black tie dresses can help you to understand the etiquette and may even help you select the perfect dress.

Despite the description, your dress doesn’t need to be black, although it can be. However, it should be just one color.

Although floor-length, it doesn’t mean it can’t hug and show off your curves. You also have plenty of options for the top, on-shoulder, off-shoulder, or half-and-half.

Cocktail Dresses Work

You may be relieved to know that a good cocktail dress can be the perfect choice for a black-tie event. However, this type of dress should never be above the knee and it needs to be structured, highlighting your figure.

Because this is a slightly dressed-down version of the black-tie dress it is important you dress it up with the very best jewelry and a great pair of heels. Again, while most colors can be used, it is best to go with blocks of color. That is one color for the entire dress or one for the top half and one for the bottom.

The Black Tie Gown

Being invited to a black-tie event is a great excuse to get yourself a black-tie gown and dress up. You may not often have this sort of opportunity, you should make the most of it. Just makes sure that the shoes and accessories are as high-class as the dress. A black-tie event is not the venue to show off your latest fashion trends. This is a place where you stick to classic designs that hug and enhance your silhouette.

Black Tie Weddings

It should be noted that a black-tie wedding is slightly different. While the above guidelines will ensure you look fantastic in a red carpet situation, a standard full-length dress is acceptable for a black-tie wedding.

Equally, you should avoid white or black and go for more neutral colors like navy, red, or even a pink.  After all, you don’t want to upstage the bride! That is perhaps the biggest mistake you can ever make.
