Converting Your Garage Into The Den That You Need
One of the easiest ways to add usable and livable space to any home is to finish a space that already exists but isn’t quite suitable for daily use. Finishing the basement is one such answer, but if you have a garage that you’re not really using a whole lot, then you could just as easily get the space you need for a den or a hangout spot by converting it, as well.
Insulate and weatherproof
The biggest problem that stops you from using a garage on a regular basis is the lack of weatherproofing and insulation, leaving it more open to influence from the elements. Insulate your walls and ceiling to maintain a more comfortable temperature all throughout the year, seal your doors and windows to prevent drafts from getting through, and consider installing a new weatherproof garage door, or even converting the door into a wall with a more standard entry, if you don’t plan on using it for your car at all, from now on.
Choose the right flooring for it
The hard concrete floor that comes as standard when most garages are first built might be good for a car, but it’s not good for your feet, nor your comfort. Look into other options to decide what type of flooring you want, whether it’s the comfort and soft appeal of a garage carpet, vinyl or laminate flooring (which can be easier to clean if you want to make a workout spot), or otherwise. If you’re not able to make that full conversion just yet, an area rug can be an affordable middle ground.
Set up its utilities
Of course, a livable space requires access to the utilities that keep the space comfortable. Your garage might already have some access to electricity, but you need to ensure that you have the electrical outlets and power supply that can make it a much more usable space, not to mention lighting fixtures more appropriate for a hangout spot. Similarly, consider your heating and cooling needs, whether you need to invest in any HVAC system upgrades for the space, or if you can make do with portable heaters and air conditioners, instead.
Furnishing the space
Choose furniture and decor that make the space inviting and functional. This includes comfortable seating like sofas, chairs, and bean bags for ample seating options. You may want to set up a TV, gaming system, or sound system for entertainment. Storage solutions like shelves, cabinets, and storage bins can keep the space organized. You should also think about personal touches, be it artwork, photos, or decor, that reflect your personal style and make the space feel like home. When you’re decorating, always try to be mindful of how many people you want in the space and how they’re supposed to be able to use it.
The tips above might be focused on the creation of a den, but the general steps on how to finish your garage apply to whatever you might want to turn it into, as well, be it a home office, gym room, or otherwise.
