Why not look around the internet for tips to be more eco-friendly. You will be surprised how many small things you can change over time and help save the planet, be sustainable but also for a better you.
Food
The most important thing I am mindful of is food. I used to spend a lot of money on food especially fresh. It was very hard to get shopping and I found the foods would be going bad quite quickly.
So I started to look for frozen alternatives. Although frozen isn’t as good as fresh, there was still wonderful options now such as frozen kale, tenderstem broccoli and asparagus.
I’m vegetarian so I eat vegetables every day, whether it is in a curry or stir fry, to adding them to a meal like pasta or as a side dish.
I still get fresh fruits of course, but some of my veg like peas, green beans and the above are all frozen.
Another thing I have stopped is buying fresh meat. No one eats it anymore. When I made something such as a Sunday Lunch, no one really eats the fresh chicken. S I have swapped this for things they enjoy, such as sausages.
I’m growing my own herbs and hoping I can grow some vegetables.
When I make too much food and I am able to, I freeze them in reusable packaging. They are a wonderful way to store delicious meals and I can eat them for lunch, usually the next day.
There has been some waste research into how much we are wasting, from food to energy.
Be mindful of what you are consuming and purchasing!
Recycling/reusing
One of my tips for being eco-friendly is to reuse and recycle things as much as I can.
So for food storage, I bought a pack of plastic tubs that can be washed and reused. They are fantastic. I also have microwave ones too where I put something in for the next day and can throw it in my microwave.
I keep a lot of jars and any packaging I can reuse for storage or my business. I ordered a few things and got a lot of brown paper and bubble wrap, I saved it all as I can use it as packaging, instead of throwing it away. These are wonderful tips for being eco-friendly.
I keep jars, bottles and anything glass. They come in very useful as I do infuse oils with herbs and flowers. Also, I create tinctures and these are so very handy to store.
When it comes to clothing, if I have something in my wardrobe that is being unused, I will create it into something useful. I also fix things that are broken such as a strap on a top, or a hole that appeared.
Why not look ta upcycling your own furniture for your garden or home, give something a good lick of paint and you have a beautiful item to use!
Crates are a wonderful idea to create some wonderful garden items, such as planters and storage and I wanted to mention this in my tips for being eco-friendly.
Energy consumption
It’s always wise to consider the amount of energy you are consuming. When you are not at home or asleep, you should consider turning off anything that doesn’t need to be on.
Although the electronics are turned off when plugged in, they will still be using energy to either keep the timer on or something else that is consuming energy.
Go round your home each night and check, or just make sure things are turned off at the plug after use. Rather than on the gadget.
There are loads of friendly tips for saving money as well as being eco-friendly.
Eco-friendly products
Why not consider switching what you can to eco-friendly products. Skincare is my priority when looking for eco-friendly products. Zero waste soap bars are a constant staple in my routine. Why not check out this great list of soap bars and see what pops out to you!
For me, I try and get eco-friendly items in packaging that can be recycled or reused. If I can get less plastic, I feel better and not contributing to the masses of plastic that people use.
I prefer glass over plastic, as I can safely reuse glass. Sterilise and use them for storage or making things.
Whereas I worry about using plastic for storage so tend to get rid of them.
I changed shampoo, body care and even face care to all eco-friendly. Packaging and ingredients.
Also, everything I use is natural. Which is better for the environment. Like face scrubs for example, they had plastic beads and they are no good for the earth. so I make sure mine are natural such as sugar types.
Growing your own produce
Some people might not be able to grow a lot of produce, but what you can grow, saves you money long term.
So for example, I grow herbs inside in my conservatory and then I grow other things such as tomatoes, peppers and a lot of vegetables.
I had someone build me a planter out of reused crates and painted them a lovely colour to match my garden.
You can create your own things for your garden using old items and upcycle them into beautiful furniture.
I have seen so many people that create wonderful garden items out of old crates. People throw crates all the time and they can be painted to your tastes.
