Top 5 Tips For Dealing With Back Pain
I’ve been dealing with back pain for over 15 years now and I’ve tried many fads, from sprays to creams, pads and even homemade things. So I wanted to give you Top 5 Tips For Dealing With Back Pain that I have found to be very useful with some Back Pain remedies that I found very useful.
It’s important that you are dealing with your back pain appropriately and always see a doctor before you try any home remedy and make sure there is nothing serious going on. I’ve had the all-clear to try things and had a few medical interventions along the way.
But now I am on a holistic and natural course so these remedies and aids I found super helpful. Before getting into the tips below, consider natural products too like buying CBD or cheapweed that can help with pain. I’ve even used things such as turmeric tea which is really beneficial especially for inflammation!
Top 5 Tips For Dealing With Back Pain – What worked for me
Below is a list of things that really helped me deal with the back pain I live with daily. I hope this helps you too along the way!
Heat
The newest addition I have been trying are heat blankets. From the one you put on your mattress to a snug one that wraps around your back as shown above, these were the best options to deal with the back pain I felt.
This is a constant heat that is applied to your back without burning your back like the hot water bottle burns that people get from using heat. It’s more gentle, easy to use and helps with the back pain.
I am an office worker so I sit in a chair all day which does give me terrible back pain some days, so this helps keep the pain levels low.
Again, be mindful of burns as you don’t want to end up with the burning of the area you apply it to.
The heating back wrap is my favourite as it has 6 heat settings and turns off after some time. I use this on 3 or 4, as 6 is very hot. I can also use this on other areas, like stomach when I have pains, or across my legs.
If you are out and about, you have either Cura Heat or Deep Heat which I wear on the go. They are fantastic when I am in a lot of pain and need the heat on my back as I am out shopping or visiting others. They are patches you place on the affected area and it gives you a lovely warming feeling throughout the day.
If you decide to go for a hot water bottle, never use boiling or hot water, as you will end up with hot water bottle burns which are called Erythema ab igne. I’m still scarred slightly from it after years of use, now it does eventually fade away bit it takes an incredibly long time. I am talking more than 5 years.
For my bed, I use the Silent Night Comfort Control Electric Blanket which I have on my bed, I purchased the single as it is only me that uses heat.
Finally, you have the Lavender and Wheat microwave bags which give you short bursts of heat, they don’t last very long though.
Yoga/Exercise for back pain
Some might not agree with me but Yoga and exercise specifically for back pain can help strengthen your muscles and stretch out the pain over time.
I write about how yoga can change your life and also 30 days of yoga which has really helped me manage my pain and my back is strengthened after some time. At first, it is hard but the more you exercise, the better you feel.
I’d found that I had more mobility when I had been doing yoga for a long period of time. It really had changed how my body deals with pain and found at times, the pain had lessened.
If you want to start yoga, you want to find the best yoga mats around.
You can find dedicated exercise programs for back pain, building your core strength and also stretching out your spine and giving your muscles a good work out.
It’s never easy when you start and you feel lethargic and in some cases, in more pain. But the more you do it, the less pain you feel. You need to allow your body to get used to it.
Change your posture
Back pain can be caused by bad posture so making sure you are sat or standing correctly will help correct any issues with your spine due to bad posture.
There are items where you can correct your posture, such as a posture corrector which can help you with keeping your spine in good shape. You can also find a full back posture corrector if you don’t want one that only does part of your back, as pictured above.
I also found some books to help with posture correcting exercises or Overcoming poor posture which is another good read.
Topical products
Products like Voltarol and Deep Heat are my best friend. I do prefer to use Voltarol when it’s bad and I know something is inflamed like a nerve. Deep Deat is great when my back is worse due to the cold and it gives me a good arming sensation on my back.
You can also use a cooling product such as Deep Freeze which is a cold feeling gel. This is great when something is feeling hot and inflamed, such as a nerve. You also have the Deep Freeze Patches, similar to Deep heat but they feel cold rather than hot.
So you have either the heat or cold.
Some like to use a topical painkiller like Voltarol, Ibuleve Max and Deep Relief. These are generally NSAID gels that target the area of the pain. I use these more so when it is muscular as I prefer taking them orally when it’s nerve pain. It’s better to use ibuprofen or NSAIDs topically as they can cause issues with your stomach with long term use.
Aids for pain relief
I found a warming neck and back massager and this is great for the days when the muscular pain is really bad and I need something good to get deep into the muscles. Or there is a Shiatsu neck massager if the pain is in your shoulders and neck area.
You can get a handheld back massager and it’s long enough to use yourself or ask someone to use it on you too. This is a deep tissue massager so if you are suffering from back pain due to muscular issues, then a massager is really a good idea.
Alternatively, you can pop to a local holistic centre and have a deep tissue massage there. Or a chiropractor if you have continual back issues.
Always remember before using any of these gadgets, creams etc that you see a GP before you try anything. This just rules out any severe back issues.
Remember that back pain can be considered as chronic pain if it lasts for a long time, depending on the issue and age, most people have to live with back pain like me.
So finding ways to ease the pain, even a little is really worth investing your time and money.
