We all know that maintaining your home is very important and we are always ensuring that everything is in tip top condition. So I sat here and thought, well, might as well write my top tips for maintaining your home.

Whether it is ensuring your boiler is working or updating your flooring, we all need to ensure that we are doing the right things to keep our home in good condition.

So here are some tips which might help!

Boiler

Ensure your boiler is serviced annually, this will ensure it is working at full power and there are no issues with you boiler.

You can get a service through many options that offer a yearly service and costs are included to maintain your boiler if it is no longer working, or not working to usual standards.

Foundations

Always check for cracks as you may need a foundation crack repair and ensure the company you are dealing with is really good.

The foundation is very vital in ensuring your home stays safe, no leaks or issues with any part.

This keeps your home stable and if you find any cracks, ensure you have this sorted as soon as possible, to avoid a larger expense or more issues later on.

Roof

Check your roof annually to ensure there are no holes or missing tiles. Having minor repairs done can save you money in the long run.

Especially have it checked after a period of bad weather such as snow, high winds just to check that all is good.

Flooring

Flooring is an essential part of our home and checking them over every couple of years will ensure that there is no wear and tear or damage.

You should get your flooring changed when it starts to wear to avoid any accidents.

I have laminate flooring in some rooms and ensure that it is not bubbling or dipping, as sometimes especially due to hear or water can start to warp.

If you have carpets, ensure they are still secure and not moving around. Again this will help avoid any accidents.

Plumbing

I always recommend to check your plumbing. Ensure your pipes are not leaking and check for blockages.

Give your drains a clean every few months to ensure that you are getting adequate drainage in sinks and bath.

If you notice that items are not draining right, this could be a problem outside and may need to call in someone to check.

This will avoid any further issues that may become expensive later on.

Guttering

Guttering is very important for those days we have rain, I mean we do get it quite often over here so checking your guttering is important.

If you have any cracked or work guttering, ensure you get this replaced.

I would also recommend to clean your guttering once or twice a year, especially if you live near trees as leaves can get stuck in the guttering.

This will ensure that your gutters are working properly.

Taps and Shower Heads

Taps can leak over time so it’s always a good idea to check there are no leaks. This could cause a larger problem later on if not checked.

Also giving your taps a good clean every month as they can collect mildew. The same with showerheads, give them a thorough clean with mildew remover and them a good limescale cleaner if you like in a medium to hard water area,

This will ensure you are getting the maximum force of water required.

Grout/Seals

Check your grouting anywhere you have it, check for cracks as this could lead to water seeping through, especially around your shower area.

Also check on the floors if you have grout in your floor to avoid your flooring moving.

If you have seals around the bath and windows, check these yearly as they can dry out and shrink, letting in water and causing condensation.

Ideally they will need replacing.

Cleaning them regularly will also help keep damage at bay. You can do this yourself, but if it hasn’t been done in a while, it can be a big job. Knowing who to contact for tile and grout cleaning will put you in a better position at keeping everything clean.

Gas

Ensure you have yearly gas checks to make sure there are no leaks or issues with your appliances that are gas.

You can also get a service where you have a check annually.

Fire alarms/Carbon Monoxide alarm

Check your fire alarms are working every few months, as well as carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working correctly in the event of a fire or a carbon monoxide leak.

Change the batteries regularly if they are battery operated. Always use brand new batteries.
