How To Achieve A Good Quality Of Life When You’re Self-Employed

Being self-employed isn’t for everyone, and it’s definitely not something you should enter into lightly – it’s not like being employed where your taxes are dealt with for you and you get benefits like vacation days and sick pay, after all. However, although there are certainly negatives associated with being self-employed, there are plenty of positives as well, including having a lot more freedom and, if you do things the right way, having a fantastic quality of life.

It’s this last idea that we’re going to help you achieve today because it’s not always easy to do, especially when you’re in the middle of running a business and it feels like you can’t see the wood for the trees. If that’s the case, it’s time to take a step back and look objectively at how you’re going about things – it could be that you need to make some changes, but it’s definitely possible to achieve a good quality of life when you’re self-employed (in fact, it’s the whole point). With that in mind, keep reading to find out more.

Prioritize The Work-Life Balance

One of the main reasons people choose to be self-employed rather than work for someone else is the flexibility – it’s just not something you can generally get when you’re employed unless you’ve been very lucky with the job you’ve landed. The problem is that this flexibility can quickly be a rather nasty double-edged sword if you don’t manage it properly because you can easily start to work a lot more than you would if you were employed.

That’s why you need to prioritize your work-life balance and put some boundaries in place, like designated work hours that you stick to. When you do that, it helps you to create a good routine and stops work from spilling over into what should be your personal or family time – and don’t think it won’t happen because it will, even without you noticing it. It’s also a good idea to have a dedicated workspace so you can literally shut the door on work at the end of the day and not have to go back in there until you start work again in the morning – it’s far less tempting to check emails or tweak your website if you’re not in the room with the ability to do it. And of course, take regular breaks through the day because when you take breaks, you’ll actually get more done – you’ll have more energy so you can be more productive, and that’s going to mean shorter hours and more time for yourself.

Manage Your Finances Wisely

If you’re self-employed the biggest thing that can cause an issue is a lack of financial stability – some months you’ll make more and some months you’ll make less, and it’s hard to know where you are from one moment to the next.

Budgeting can help a lot in this situation, and even though that’s not going to help you know how much you’re making, you can work on a ‘worst case scenario’, which will help, and if you do have money left over, that’s a nice bonus. You can start by creating a detailed budget that accounts for both your personal and business expenses and including a savings plan for taxes (if you forget that and spend the money you’ll be in trouble by the time you have to pay up) and emergencies.

Self-employed people can worry that they won’t be able to get a mortgage, so they don’t even think about saving for a down payment or getting their credit in order, but it’s perfectly possible to buy a house when you’re self-employed, so if that’s something you want to do you can budget for that too. It’s a good idea to speak to experts about your specific situation, though; if you need a mortgage for self employed with bad credit, for example, getting expert advice is the best thing to do.

Take Care Of Your Health

It doesn’t matter whether you’re self-employed, you work for someone else, or you’re out of work – the fact is that you need to take care of your health if you want a good quality of life. Start by creating a daily routine that gives you time to exercise regularly – ideally once a day, but if not, then longer sessions fewer times a week can have just as good an effect. Not only will you get physically healthier when you exercise more often, but your stress levels will lower too, so you’ll be mentally healthier as well (and when you run your own business, having a clear head that’s as stress-free as possible is definitely going to help you do a better job).

Healthy eating also has to be part of your plan if you want a good quality of life, so plan your meals in advance – it’s the last minute panic to find something to eat and then realize everything’s going to take too long to cook or you don’t have anything in the house that leads to unhealthy choices like takeout or skipping meals altogether. Yes, you’re busy, but if you can take half an hour a week just to plan out your meals, you’ll never have that rushed panic again. It’s even better if you can prepare as much as possible in advance, and perhaps even batch-cook healthy food, so finding the time is much more important than you might realize.

If you really want to be sure you’re taking care of your health properly, it’s a good idea to make regular appointments to see your doctor (and your dentist, optician, therapist, and anyone else who helps with your health) so they can check up on how you’re doing, give you useful advice, and spot anything untoward before it becomes a bigger problem that’s harder to deal with.

Final Thoughts

Although you might think having a great quality if life is harder when you’re self-employed (at least when you’re just starting out), hopefully everything we’ve said above has helped to see that it’s perfectly possible. If you want to become self-employed, could it be time to take the next step?
