Costa Rica probably has never been particularly high up your vacation wish list. We don’t hear about them much, they’re rarely in the news, and a country that small rarely features on our international radars. But we could be missing a trick. The country is gaining popularity as a vacation destination, and is set to be Central America’s ultimate low cost travel capital. But as it stands, the truth of the matter is that it is still relatively unspoiled by the tourism industry, and full of beautiful scenery and incredible adventures. Here are just a few reasons you have to visit.

Their coffee is incredible

Chances are you’ve had a Costa Rican coffee without even realizing it. It’s a major factor in their economy, and their coffee bean production is world renown for making the richest, deepest, most delicious coffee.

It’s the world’s happiest country

Maybe because they have no national army, maybe it’s all the delicious coffee and cute animals, but Costa Rica is officially the most satisfying place to live, which means it has to be a pretty great place to visit, right? As well as being a pretty great place, it is also very pretty to look at. You can visit amazing spots like the National Park Marino Las Baulas or if you want something more adventurous you can look at Papagayo fishing charters to enjoy the scenery, relax and fish!

You can see the sea turtles

If you’re a lover of nature, why not volunteer in Costa Rica to help conservation of the sea turtles? They breed on the beaches there, but their habitats are threatened, so volunteers are working tirelessly to protect their homes and future generations.

There’s a cloud forest

Home to many birds and over 500 species of wild orchid, the Monteverde cloud forest is now a nature reserve full of incredible wildlife, and an absolute must-visit.

The thermal spas are so relaxing

With over 100 volcanoes, six of which are still active, Costa Rica and volcanoes are intrinsically connected. The best thing about all that volcanic activity is the incredible thermal spas, with mineral rich water and mud, great for soothing aches and pains and getting some much needed TLC.

The beaches are to die for

Long, unspoiled white beaches, beautiful resorts, and incredible ocean sea life make Costa Rica beach holidays to die for. Take part in a bit of snorkeling around the reefs, surfing the waves of the Nicoya Peninsula, or just soak up the sun.

There are so many hummingbirds!

It’s literally the hummingbird capital of the world, with at least 52 different species. Watch out for them in the Monteverde cloud forest, or around any of the national parks – you won’t miss the cute little guys.

It’s really family friendly

Many people are wary of taking their families to Central America due to reports of high crime rates, but the reality is completely different. It’s easy to travel around, the locals are super smiley and welcoming, and there are absolutely loads for kids to do and see. You can travel the treetops
