6 Questions To Ask Yourself When Changing Careers
Approaching a career change can be a confusing time. To help you figure out your new direction here are six key questions to ask yourself when changing careers.
1 . Is my career the problem, or is it the company?
Before you pursue a new career you’ll want to ensure that it’s your career that’s the problem. Have you ever considered the fact that you might just be working for the wrong company?
If you’re working for a company that has a poor company culture it could be the business itself that’s the issue. Perhaps your company fails at employee recognition, or doesn’t offer a competitive salary? Maybe your company has an overbearing management style? The chances are, if you pursued the same role within a better company, you’d feel more fulfilled and motivated.
- Why am I looking to change careers?
When you’re opting for a career change it’s important to figure out your reasons. Establishing the reasons behind this decision can help you to move in the right direction. To help you figure this out, here are a few of the top reasons why people change careers. You might find that one or more of these apply to you:
- Looking for a career with a higher salary.
- Seeking a role with improved job satisfaction.
- Feeling unchallenged and bored.
- Seeking a career with more flexibility.
- Pursuing a job that gives something back.
- What experience do I have?
Now it’s time to assess your experience, review your work experience to date, your qualifications and any voluntary work you’ve completed. Make a list of your key achievements, skills, attributes, and transferable skills. Additionally, be sure to mention if you’ve taken any courses relevant to your new industry and skills. For instance, if you’ve studied and passed one of these itil courses and are looking for a job in IT asset management, it would be foolish not to highlight this to your new potential employer.
Outlining your experience will help you to figure out your options. You’ll need to determine whether you have skills that can be transferred into a new industry. If you feel that there are too many gaps in your knowledge and wanted to teach something like yoga, then it could be highly beneficial of you to pursue courses in hatha yoga teacher trainings to learn more and become formally qualified in the field.
- What are my key passions?
Many people seek a career change because they don’t enjoy the work that they do. Approaching a career change is a great opportunity to get back to your passions. Those who enjoy the creative side of things may want to start up their own website to sell their art, or maybe for those interested in the healthcare field, looking for a Philadelphia caregiver job could be a rewarding option, providing a chance to make a real difference in people’s lives while pursuing meaningful work. Spend some time writing down what you would ideally do for work. Be ambitious, (but try to remain realistic also)!
Do you have any hobbies or side hustles that would work as a business idea? Is running a business something you could see yourself doing? Answering questions like this will help you to start moving in the right direction.
- Could I benefit from career coaching?
Career coaching can be incredibly helpful, especially if you’re not sure which direction to go in. A career coach can help you in a number of different ways including:
- Identifying your transferable skills.
- Helping you to brainstorm opportunities that could be a good fit.
- Support preparing resumes and cover letters.
- Practice with interview preparation.
- What steps do I need to take to pursue this new career?
You’ll need to perform a good deal of research to find out exactly how to pursue your new career. Find out which experience and qualifications you’ll need, along with any training courses.
