Cuitadella is a pretty Spanish port and makes the perfect place for a mooch. It used to be the capital of culture and commerce. Today it is a delightful city with a charming port and old part. There are many churches that are well worth exploring. There is also the Gothic cathedral in Placa de la Catedral which dates back to the 13th century. You could also have a coffee in Placa d’es Born, which is one of the most picturesque squares in Ciutadella. Then there  is the Place Libertat which is home to the covered market and a great place to go looking for some thrifty goodies. There is also the Ciutadella Festival which takes place on 23-24th of June each year. It is a spectacular festival and well worth a visit!

 

Monte Toro

Legend has it that Monte Toro (Menorca’s highest point) takes its name from a bull which led a group of monks to a statue of the Virgin Mary in the rock face. Many believe that this peak is now the spiritual centre of Menorca. There is an imposing statue of ‘Jesus of the Sacred Heart’ and you will also find Sanctuary of the Virgin El Torro. This was built around 1670 on the site of old 13th century Gothic church. It is well worth a visit and you should take the time to look inside the Sanctuary of the Virgin El Torro where you will find the walls adorned with tapestries.

 

Cala Macarelleta

Cala Macarelleta is a beautiful beach on the south western side of Menorca. It is a glorious bay with clear blue water. However, be warned that this beach is also a favourite amongst nudists. This is the beach you always see on the front of postcards from Menorca.

 

Explore The Coastal Paths

The Cami de Cavalls is Menorca’s 186km coastal path. This route is now massively popular with bikers and walkers. This walk is best tackled in spring or autumn when the temperatures are a bit cooler. The walk is split into 20 chunks between 5 and 14km. The easiest part of the route takes about 2 and a half hours and the most challenging parts of the route can take around 5 hours. The best section of the walk for those stunning views is between Cala Galdana and Santo Tomas.

 

Es Grau beach And Nature Reserve

This is the perfect beach for some paddling as the water stays shallow for about 40 metres out. You will see groups of people stood just casually chatting in the sea.  It doesn’t feel like a holiday resort as it is pleasingly underdeveloped. There is just a handful of restaurants and shops. All of the buildings look stunning in their whitewash too. This is the perfect place to enjoy a very leisurely lunch.

Es Grau is a beautiful beach that backs onto the low dunes of the S’Albufera des Grau nature reserve.   Here you will find information panels detailing the floras and fauna that can be found. There is also a large lake which attracts migrating birds in spring and autumn. There are three short routes marked around the reserve, perfect for those who want a little stroll after lunch.
