5 Smart Things to Try if You Can’t Sleep

There’s nothing worse than deciding it’s bedtime and then lying in bed and not being able to fall asleep. Or you fall asleep, but you can’t stay asleep. The average adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Less than that and you face health risks and you may have trouble concentrating, which can be detrimental to your performance at work and poses safety risks, such as when you’re driving. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to get the sleep your body needs. Talk to your doctor to get the root of your sleep issues and try adding these ideas to your bedtime routine. It’s important to get a good night’s sleep.

Adjust Your Temperature

Experts say that the best temperature for sleeping is between 60 and 67 degrees. Lower or higher than that and you’ll be too uncomfortable to get the rest you need. This temperature range encourages your body to wind down and get into sleep mode. Plus, being able to add an extra blanket to your bed is cozy and conducive to rest. Your mattress also plays a big part in how you sleep, including your temperature. Listen to Music

Sometimes the noises outside or elsewhere in your home can keep you from sleeping well. Playing soft, soothing music can mask those sounds and help you get into sleep mode. Just be sure the music doesn’t have words as that can be distracting and that it’s not too loud, which also makes it hard to sleep.

Drink Something Hot

There’s something relaxing and comforting about sipping a warm drink at bedtime. The warmth also tells your body it’s time to sleep so you can get cozy in your bed. Be sure that your drink doesn’t have caffeine in it and that’s not too hot. Hot cocoa and warm milk are some great options to try. Hot chamomile and green tea are other great choices.

Cover Your Eyes

If you live in the city or with other people who are up later than you, light may be filtering into your sleeping space and making it hard to get to sleep. Wearing a sleep mask can help block that light so you aren’t lying awake waiting for it to get dark. This is also important if you do shift work and sleep during the day. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good sleep mask but be sure it’s snug and comfortable.

Disconnect from Close Range Electronic Devices

Your television, smartphone and tablet give off blue light, which tells your body it’s daytime. At the same time, watching your favorite shows or playing games wakes your brain up, rather than helping it unwind. Putting these devices away in favor of a book or journal can really help you get to sleep.

The right sleeping environment is often all it takes to start getting the sleep you need so that you can get through your days healthy and happy.
