Help them to find a purpose

One of the things elderly people find the hardest is having a purpose. With limited mobility and just general ageing, they can find they don’t get out and don’t have a job anymore as they have retired. To help them feel like themselves, give them something to focus on. You could ask them for help in the garden or with cooking meals. You could also find some groups that they can go to which can enable them to meet with other like-minded individuals and be a reason for them to get out during the day and have a bit more of a schedule.

Assist them with medical appointments

As you age, you are likely to have more medical ailments happen to you than you would like. These can range from mild ones such as aching joints, to those that are more serious. Elderly relatives might experience things such as encephalopathy from a UTI if they have a UTI that is left untreated. It’s important to speak to your loved ones and find out about any health conditions, why they might have happened and accompany them to medical appointments if they need them.

Socialise with them when you can

Loneliness is one of the worst things elderly relatives can experience as they might not be able to get out and about and might not have friends that are nearby. To avoid this being an issue, socialise with them where you can, whether this is having a cup of tea together, going for a walk, or taking them to a group where they can meet other people. This can really help their mental wellbeing in no time.

These are just a few things you can do to help elderly relatives feel like themselves. While ageing is an inevitable and natural process, it’s losing the abilities to do things they  used to or being able to get around easily that can have a negative impact both on their physical and mental wellbeing. By keeping an eye on them and helping them to feel like a pillar to society and have a purpose, you can really make a big difference and help them to have a good quality of life.
