How To Stay Calm When You’re Stuck In Traffic

We’ve all been there; inching along, often stopping, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic… it’s not a great situation to be in at the best of times, and sometimes it’s the worst possible outcome after a bad day. Sitting there and waiting to move can definitely cause stress levels to rise, and we’ll become more and more frustrated, and whether it’s a common thing on the daily commute or something more unexpected, getting stuck in traffic can be awful.

The good news is that it is possible to stay calm when you’re stuck in traffic, and although it’s still never going to be exactly fun, it can be made better. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more about what you need to do.

Call It Me Time

It’s true that just naming a problem something more positive won’t actually change what it is and the inconvenience it’s causing, but it can change how you feel about it, at least temporarily, so it’s certainly worth a go. When it comes to traffic, rather than getting annoyed because you’re not getting anywhere and your journey is taking longer than it should, you can call the situation ‘me time’ and use it to your advantage.

It’s good to take breaks and slow down – it’s essential for our mental and physical health, in fact – so since you’re in traffic and you’re being forced to have a break, use it wisely. Listen to some great music or a podcast, catch up with friends and family using hands-free technology, or just sit in silence and look at the things around you, letting your mind wander. You might feel better once you start driving again.

Enjoy Your Car

Another way to turn a negative into a positive situation is to focus on your car – you’re sitting in it, after all, so it’s the one thing you can definitely concentrate on. You might like your car, but have you ever really considered how great it is before or looked at all the different nooks and crannies around you? Possibly not, but since you’re stuck in it, now’s the ideal time to explore (without leaving the driving seat, of course).

How comfortable are the seats? How smooth is the ride (when you’re moving), how powerful is the engine? And, if you find that you can’t see a lot to like about your car, it might be time to visit MG car dealers for a new one – in either case, you’ll have learned something, so the time won’t have been wasted.

Focus On What You Can Control

You can’t control the traffic – whatever has happened to cause a delay has happened, and that’s out of your hands. However, you can definitely control your reaction to it (and you definitely should).

Rather than dwelling on the negative and feeling out of control, which is only going to raise your stress levels and make you feel worse, you need to focus on the things you can control. For example, you can make your seat more comfortable, make sure you drink plenty of water, contact the people who need to know you’re stuck and rearrange appointments if you need to. When you take control, you’ll feel less stressed and the traffic won’t be such an issue anymore.
