When Should You Speak To Your Dentist About Sensitive Teeth?

Tooth sensitivity is a very common problem and many of us experience it, to some degree. You may notice that your teeth hurt when you eat very hot or cold foods. In most cases, people learn to live with sensitive teeth and they just avoid trigger foods. You can also use specialist toothpaste for sensitive teeth to manage the problem.

However, there are some situations when you should speak to your dentist such as DentalBe about sensitive teeth because there could be something else going on. They will be able to help you manage it and maybe even get rid of the sensitivity altogether. So, when should you speak to your dentist about sensitive teeth?

Extreme Sensitivity

If you have extreme tooth sensitivity, then it is always a good idea to speak to your dentist. People that have slight discomfort when they eat or drink something cold don’t need to worry too much. However, if you experience severe pain almost every time you eat, that is a big problem. It stops you from eating and chewing food properly, which leads to other issues, so you need to resolve it right away.

Usually, people with extreme sensitivity find that over-the-counter toothpaste products don’t work for them and they need something strong from their dentist.

Sensitivity That Comes On Overnight

If you have sensitive teeth that come on overnight, then it is very likely that you are suffering from tooth decay or damage of some kind. Sensitivity is something that most people have always had or developed gradually over time as the enamel wears down a bit. When it comes on immediately, it is the sign of some kind of more serious problem.

When you suffer from extreme sensitivity that comes on overnight, you need to speak with your dentist right away because there could be something seriously wrong. It’s best to book an emergency dentist and get the problem seen to right away. If damage is not treated quickly, this can lead to tooth loss and other serious consequences for your oral hygiene.

Sensitivity In A Specific Tooth

Sensitivity in a specific tooth is another sign of damage to the teeth or gums. It may be that you are not looking after your teeth properly and they are decaying, or some kind of trauma has cracked or chipped a tooth. In this instance, you will notice consistent pain, not just when you are eating and drinking. Again, you need to see a dentist right away if this is the case because you need restorative work on your teeth.

Worse Sensitivity In The Morning

If you notice that the sensitivity is worse in the morning, this is a sign that you are grinding your teeth during the night. You grind your teeth more when you sleep and this can lead to damage over time. Grinding is more common in people with anxiety, but anyone can do it in their sleep. If you notice that the sensitivity is worse in the morning, you need to speak to a dentist and get some treatment to stop it, maybe by having a nightguard fitted.

Sensitivity can sometimes be managed at home, but in these situations, you need to get checked over by a dentist.
