Visit Charity/Thrift Shops

I used to find my favourite clothing from shopping at Charity shops. It’s always clothing people are donating and you can grab some staples like black jackets, dresses and various tops. You would be surprised what amazing things you can find when you go searching the charity shops.

There are many clothes you can haul too and alter them into something new. You’d be surprised what finds you can grab from them. Personally, I found a lot of people that went through a phase, or their weight changed would rather donate their beloved alternative clothing to a charity shop in hopes they will find a good home.

Ask behind the counter as some have a large stock of clothes and they might have something there too! Then get altering!

Alter Your Own Clothing

Through my younger years, I would alter clothes I had that I didn’t wear, or find clothes in charity shops that I could change somehow. The ideas I had would be amazing, creating things that you could not buy anywhere so they were personal to me.

You don’t even need to learn how to sew either, as there are many techniques to altering clothes and sewing isn’t even needed. If you can sew, even basic sewing, this will give you even more scope for creating fantastic Goth clothing.

My favourite thing to do was buy a plain t-shirt, rip up the back and cut it into ribbons. Then tieing them together and making really cool patterns out of the ribbons. Or corseting the back with a shoelace/ribbon and holes throughout the back or front of the top.

Altering the colour is the best tip I ever found. I used to buy wedding dresses super cheap, then dye them black. Most dresses are light so you can easily cover them in a good, black dye! Think of how many clothes you can alter this way.

If you are an expert with sewing, you can make your own clothes! I made some gorgeous dresses, tops and skirts over the years, nothing that could be purchased online. This is great for creating your own style.

Hit The Sales

Look at any shop, there will be items that will suit you or be something you can include in your lineup of clothes.

For example, I get staple leggings and t-shirt/tops from places like Primark and the supermarkets, the staples are all general clothing purchased anywhere.

You can then look for sales at the more alternative stores for things like a Lolita dress or a dress with cats on. Whaever your aesthetic is, you can find it. But wait for them to have sales, most will have one at some point and you can get more clothes for less money.

Dresses are in abundance, just think about how you can accessorise them. Belts, corsets, you name it, there is something for it!

If you are looking for Goth dresses on a budget then the one thing I will always tell someone to do is to visit charity shops and look for white dresses. There is an abundance of white or light coloured dresses and you can get some dye and dye them yourself.

This has saved me a fortune over the years. Buying light coloured dresses and dying them beautiful, dark colours. Maroon or dark blue, maybe something really out there. It depends on my mood.

Another tip I have is, if you can sew, you can buy a corset and sew on a gorgeous skirt, or take parts of dresses off and add to another. The things you can create are endless.

Pinterest is a fantastic place to find ways to alter your clothing on a budget. I wish there was something like this when I was younger and able to create even better clothing than I did. Although, I am very proud of some things I had made.

Black dresses are generally more common anyway, so you will have no problem finding a plethora of them in different stores. Try the cheaper, supermarket brands or Primark. They are generally a great start for finding your staples.

You can also try eBay for clothes, I got a lot of brand new shoes from there when bidding on them because they bought them and never wore them. The best things I own are from eBay!

Have a diverse wardrobe, mix up what you were and create different outfits and collect and make your own accessories really cheaply.

Then finish everything off with accessories. Hats, belts, studs, chains. Even throwing a nice corset over your dress will give it a lovely dimension. Think about how you can style your dresses!
