4 Tips For A Calm Home Office – Creating The Perfect Home Workspace

As we traverse the work-from-home terrain in the contemporary world, I dedicate 5-7 days each week to my home office. After investing in new furniture, I felt the pull to redecorate and adorn my workspace to craft a truly calm home office. The goal? To cultivate an atmosphere of tranquillity, comfort, and joy. Crafting the quintessential home workspace is paramount to me.

There are days when work can become a pressure cooker, particularly if I am grappling with intermittent flare-ups or bouts of brain fog that hinder my focus and productivity. This marked the perfect moment to ponder over the essentials that could transform my calm home office into an oasis that aids my day-to-day work.

While considering these changes, remember that clutter could turn into an unwanted distraction. Aim for a comfortable, welcoming space where you can immerse yourself in work and truly appreciate your time there. This, in essence, is your perfect home workspace.

Shall we dive into the details?

My Home Office Makeover – Four Key Elements to a Calm Home Office Decor and DIY

Initially, I needed to decide on the decorating style for my home office. Should it make a bold statement, or evoke a sense of calm?

Aiming for a calm home office implied opting for a soothing colour scheme that wouldn’t agitate or distract me.

Despite my fondness for vivid hues, I had to remember to select subtle shades. I finally settled on a neutral stone shade for my workspace.

This proved an excellent backdrop for diverse artwork to enliven my home workspace. I could opt for a wintery landscape during the colder months and transition to vibrant floral prints come summer.

Should you choose temporary decor, you can alter it according to the season or your mood—an option well worth pondering.

Additionally, it’s crucial to address any areas needing attention or fixing. You may need to engage in a spot of DIY, especially if you’re considering shelving or hanging pictures on the walls. Being equipped with the necessary tools for your DIY tasks is important, so ensure you have the tools you need to do the DIY and also maintain your space.

Flooring

The right flooring is crucial, providing safety and comfort.

Reflect on the items in your home office. For instance, an office chair – would it be better suited to a carpet or hard flooring? Which option would reduce wear and tear and provide safety for your chair type? For example, you might consider a desk chair mat to protect your floors from scuffing, scraping, and other damage.

In my quest for the perfect home workspace, I realised the need to relocate a radiator to create the ample working space I craved, particularly for sewing and a separate desk area.

Upon removing the old flooring, I discovered that my original plans weren’t feasible. This led to numerous changes in layout and the relocation of objects.

I positioned my desk near the windows for the option of natural ventilation during warmer weather, or proximity to the radiator when it gets chilly. I would have to look into moving a radiator and having more space for a larger working area that I need, especially for sewing and having a separate desk area too.

We opted for laminate flooring with anti-scratch properties, which proved ideal for a wheeled chair. However, a colourful rug was added to introduce a touch of vibrancy to the expansive area.

Accessories/Furniture

Choosing the right furniture and accessories for my office was another pivotal decision. When you design an office, consider what items will foster a calming and focused environment.

I incorporated plants and crystals to foster focus and tranquillity, and a diffuser and wax melt burners for a constant aromatic ambience. Large crystals such as amethyst, smoky quartz, carnelian, and rose quartz were part of my decor, with palm stones available for particularly challenging days. Incorporating incense and cone burners also helped to create a calming office.

When it comes to furniture, remember that your desk, chair, and storage are of utmost importance. Plan for enough space, and choose a chair that will provide comfort without causing discomfort. The perfect chair should be comfortable, but suitable for your space and needs. Choosing a chair is vital, so consider ergonomic chairs in Sydney (or wherever it is you are) for maximum comfort within your budget.

Your desk should have ample space for your computer and other essentials, providing the freedom to manoeuvre and accommodate other items such as pens, books, and various tools for your work.

Colour Scheme

A colour scheme significantly influences your workspace’s overall aesthetic.

My chosen palette of black, cream, stone, and rose gold accents creates a calming, muted atmosphere that truly encapsulates the calm home office I yearned for.

Before you even consider buying anything, decide on your colour scheme. This ensures that everything aligns with your vision and promotes a sense of calm and zen – contributing to your ideal home workspace.

White often emerges as a popular choice due to its calming effect and versatility. It can also make your office appear bright and airy, thereby reducing any feeling of confinement.

One thing that affects the way the colour scheme appears is the lighting in the home, and you’ll need to make sure that you are on top of this if you want your home to look its best and your home office to be effective. You might therefore want to install some custom blinds, so you can control the light levels perfectly.

Final Thoughts

Whatever route you take with your home office, ensure it resonates with your personal tastes. After all, you’ll be the one spending countless hours within the confines of your calm home office.

Selecting your furniture is an important decision. Opt for comfortable, spacious items that will serve you well in the long term.

Your workspace should be adaptable to change if required. Choosing neutral walls, for example, provides the flexibility to make adjustments as needed.

Enjoy the journey of designing your calm home office, and here’s to creating a splendid home workspace!
