TV Shows That Last An Age
There are so many TV shows out there that last an age, either that have been on going for 40+ years or that us as children watched, our children would watch. This got me thinking about TV shows that last an age and which TV show does the best or which TV shows have lasted the length of TV time.
I can remember some classics from even before my Mum was born!
I thought I would touch upon some TV shows that have lasted an age, then do a sister counterpart of Cartoons that last an age!
TV Shows That Last An Age
Coronation Street
If you are in the UK, there is no doubt you have heard of Coronation Street. If you haven’t watched it, I guarantee a family member will have at some point in their life. It’s a very prominent TV show in the UK and one of the top 5 TV Shows.
So I was that kid that had family watching it so I had no choice as back then, it was expensive to have one TV, never mind more. Plus small TV’s back then were not a thing until I was a little older.
Coronation Street (Or Corrie for short) has been running since 1960 and is based in Weatherfield, a fictional town in Salford.
Over the years, there has been many famous families living there from the Barlows to the Duckworths.
It’s highlighted many current issues such as abuse, alcoholism and much more.
Although this programme is more tailored to the older generations (Probably 30+)
Dr Who
I couldn’t do a post and not touch upon Dr Who, a very famous (Internationally too!) TV show based in and around the UK with a ‘Doctor’ that is a time lord who travels through the world, space and time.
Now it’s not exactly long running as it stopped for a number of years, before a huge come back and is still running today.
Days Of Our Lives
Although this is an American TV show, it’;s quite famous even here in the UK. I could remember family watching it when it came to Sky.
Again, similar to Coronation Street, this focuses on families such as the Hortons and the Bradys.
You see it mentioned in many TV shows and films, it always reminds me of Joey in Friends.
Brookside
Brookside ran for 21 years and I used to love watching Brookside, if they continued with Brookside, I know it would be the only soap I watch.
So Brookside was set in Liverpool, UK again with sets of families that were the main priority f the show, with many other families coming and going.
Unlike Coronation Street, this was a bit more rough around the edges and I felt, more funny.
Bringing again more common place subjects in our lives, but then highlighting current issues also.
Hollyoaks
When Brookside finished, 2 years later, along came Hollyoaks made by the same guy as Brookside and Grange Hill (Taking you back aren’t I?
Hollyoaks was more tailored to the younger generation in the style of Brookside but was a touch darker and more focusing on issues that were more prevalent to the younger generation.
Set in Chester, UK – Hollyoaks was set around a college in Chester, so the average ages for the younger generations were generally 16-19.
Of course you have long running and returning characters which started as a teen, then came back or stayed as adults.
This really does highlight issues in a more thought provoking way and has a lot of critical acclaim to it.
I admit, as I reached late 20’s, I got bored and stopped watching it so it really is for the more younger audience but will continue as your children grow.
Captain Kangaroo
This was a children television series that ran from 1955 to 1984 and was a long running children’s show in the US.
I actually remember seeing this somewhere, although it ended before my time, it was still quite popular by the time Sky came to the UK.
You can read more information about it.
Blue Peter
Blue Peter is the longest running children’s TV show in the world, running from 1958 and is still going today.
No matter what age you are, you remember Blue Peter. Whether it started when your children were young. to the present day, everyone has heard of Blue Peter.
It’s always had this nautical theme, but it was more lost as time lapsed.
From crafts to showing animals, this is a TV show that does it all. They discuss topics for children and also highlight certain themes of the year such as Guy Fawkes, Halloween and the holidays.
I wasn’t keen on it as to be fair, it bored me, but I remember so many children getting Blue Peter badges for all sorts. Having a Blue Peter badge as a child was the best thing you could get, you got into places for free or at a discount.
There are so many long running TV programs out there, either in the UK or the US and hope we see more become classed as a long running show, such as Grey’s Anatomy.
These days they are quick to end shows which is a shame as some could last for many years, so long as it starts with variety, such as characters can change frequently and the show can go on.
Do you ever think about what Brits would do in a Horror film? I am not the only one!
