5 Reasons Your Car Feels Different After the First Year
Your car feels different after about a year for many reasons, especially if it is pre-owned. Over time, the moving parts become worn and need some maintenance to stay in top condition. From hardening tires to the build-up of dirt, here are some of the most common reasons.
Settled Shocks, Struts, and Rubber Bushings
One of the most critical things that affects the comfort of your ride is the suspension system of your car. This is made of the shocks, struts, and rubber bushings that absorb vibration and keep the tyres planted. However, as the rubber bushings go over terrain, they become worn over time, which hardens them. When this happens, they begin to allow more movement, which can loosen the suspension so it feels less responsive and more baggy when driving over bumps.
The Tires are Hardening
Tires are critical for vehicle safety, but they also play a role in how the car handles and feels. Tires are subjected to a lot of force, and they can even develop a memory of your driving habits that cause wear patterns. Over the course of a year, these wear patterns can cause the tyres to feel less responsive and sharp, and can even result in more noise. However, they can also make your ride feel less comfortable as they harden and lose some of their cushioning.
Your Car Feels Different After Engine Break-In
There are many overlooked parts to a car’s maintenance, such as engine oil. It is recommended that you change the oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Of course, there are other parts of the engine that need TLC to keep your car in top condition. This is because the engine breaks down after around a year, so parts begin to wear out. Oil becomes dirty and needs changing, and other fluids can age too, which reduces engine lubrication, resulting in vibration and noise.
Deposits of Dirt and Carbon
There’s a lot of stuff in the air when driving on the roads, and much of it ends up in your car. But don’t worry, as your car is equipped with filters that prevent you from breathing it all in. However, the filters do get clogged up. Alongside clogged fuel injectors and throttle bodies, the engine begins to receive a less-than-optimal air-to-fuel ratio. As a result, your car can begin to feel much different in terms of acceleration, will use more fuel, and the throttle can feel less eager.
Loosened Steering and Transmission
Cars have rubber mounts and pivot points in the steering and transmission, which can develop “slop”. This basically means they become looser over time, which results in increased vibrations in the steering column and even the cabin. This is why mastering transmission maintenance is essential for a happy car. Without proper vehicle care, your vehicle can begin to feel less crisp when steering and shifting as opposed to when you first purchased it a year ago.
Summary
Settled suspension components are one of the reasons your car feels different after driving for about a year. The engine fluids, such as oil, can also become dirty and need replacing. Also, the steering and transmission can become looser and require annual maintenance to stay tight.
