How to Cope with a Broken Leg
2 January 2025
One of the hardest things to deal with in life is breaking your leg. Not only can it prevent you from going to work, but it can prevent you from moving around properly. You have to alter your lifestyle so that you can carry out even the simplest of tasks, and that’s not always easy to do. In fact, it can result in you feeling helpless or dependent, and that can be very frustrating.
It’s important that you learn how to deal with your day-to-day activities while maneuvering around with a broken leg, and while that can be frustrating, it can be done. Let’s take a look at how you can cope when you’ve broken your leg.
- Get some help with moving around. The biggest challenge that you’re going to face when you break your leg is moving around. You can buy pre-owned & used mobility scooters to help you, you can recruit people around you to support you physically and you can use a walker or a stick. Crutches can help you to support your leg, but it’s not a feasible option for many. So make sure that you are looking at used and new mobility scooters. You can even hire them so that you don’t have to keep it long term.
- Learn how to protect your cast. You need to be able to get in and out of the shower even when your leg is broken. That means that you have to protect your cast so that it doesn’t become wet. You need to create a strong protective layer over it, and that means wrapping around layers of plastic and towels and securing them with duct tape.It might sound a bit too much, but you can’t afford to have water leaking into your cast and therefore causing more damage to your leg. Ask your doctor whether or not there is anything you can slip over the cost rather than having to jury rig a protective shield.
- Move downstairs. One of the biggest challenges that people face with a broken leg is that they can’t get up and down the stairs to go to bed. Maneuvering the stairs is not easy, so move everything that you need to move downstairs and recruit help from friends and family to help you to do this. This way you don’t have to use your stairs while you are trussed up with a damaged leg. If you have to use the upstairs because your bathroom is up there, then find out whether you can have some kind of seat installed, so that you can be lifted from the bottom of the stairs to the top.
- Ask for help. You may feel too proud to ask for help from other people, but it’s not something you should feel resentful about. It’s OK to ask for help because this is only a temporary condition. There are others out there who will be more than happy to assist you and ensure that you’re able to be looked after. It can be distressing to break your leg, and it can be even worse to lean on other people, but it doesn’t have to be damaging to you long term!
