Has Your Career Stalled? Here’s What to Do About It!
Career paths are a funny thing. Some people know exactly what they want to do from an early age and are focused on achieving their goal. They head off to college, earn the right degree, and end up doing a job they love. Other people have no real idea what they want to do, so they end up drifting from job to job, earning a low wage and enjoying zero job satisfaction along the way. Like most people, you probably fall somewhere in the middle of those two points, but if you are feeling as if your career trajectory has stalled, here are some tips to help you kick start it again.
Common Signs of Career Dissatisfaction
Do you hate Monday mornings with a passion? Do you spend more time watching YouTube than doing fee-paying work at the office? Have you spent months signed off for stress and your doctor has warned you your health is at risk if you continue in your current job? Do you hate your boss and despise your colleagues? If so, you may be in the wrong career. The good news is that there is plenty you can do to recover the situation.
Have a Heart-to-Heart with Your Boss
The first thing you should do if you are unhappy at work is talk to your boss or HR manager. There may be things they can do to rectify the situation. For example, if you feel that your job description is not clear or you don’t have enough to do, they can give you new responsibilities or let you move to a different department. Ultimately, you may decide that you need a new job, but you should at least try to improve the current one.
Go Back to College
Going back to college is sensible if you are stuck in a low-paid job or you have reached a point where your career has stalled. Look at courses that fit your current experience or try something completely different. For example, if you are a nurse, you may wish to look at online RN to MSN programs from Bradley University, as an MSN in nursing administration is essential if you want to progress into nursing administration.
Take a Break
If you are feeling seriously down and you can’t see the wood for the trees, consider taking an extended sabbatical from your career so you have time and space to think about your options. Some employers offer unpaid leave, so if yours does, take it and use the time wisely. As long as you have some savings to keep you afloat, this is a good option.
Start a Business
Thanks to the rise of e-commerce, starting a business is easy these days. If you are unhappy in your chosen career, have a go at building a low-cost start-up in your spare time. You can work your business alongside your current job, and then switch once you have a guaranteed income. It’s a low-risk strategy, so give it a go!
Don’t sit around complaining about your miserable job. Take the bit between your teeth and do something to change the status quo!
